< Back - Becoming a Mason

What does it take to become a Freemason?
Does my father or grandfather had to have been one for me to join?  Do I have to be active in politics, or a member of one certain political party?  Do I need to be rich, affluent or have a doctorate or be famous?  Do I have to be invited by a Mason to join?  Does it cost thousands of dollars to join?  Do I have to swear allegiance to some strange deity or worship a god other than the one of my choosing?  Is Masonry a religion?  Are Masons all ex or current military members?  ...and what about all of that weird stuff I read on the internet about Freemasonry...?

Simply... No!

...and that stuff you read on the internet, well, there's a lot of information out there about Freemasonry; TV, movies, books, and of course the internet.  If you've been researching Masonry you've probably run into some real strange and hopefully some real enlightening stuff too!  Here we're going to dispel a few of the common myths and try to answer the a few basic questions that we often hear from men interested in Freemasonry.

In Colorado there are a few requirements we'll list them and tackle them one at a time.

  • You must be a man 18 years of age or older.

This is a fraternity, and only men can become members.  There are very many appendent bodies for women and girls to join which are a part of Masonry, however, to be a Mason you must be a male and at at least 18 years of age.

  • You must believe in the existence of a living god.

In other words; no atheists allowed.  We welcome Buddhists, Muslims, Christians, Jewish, Hindus... I could go on and on obviously.  The point is a candidate must have a true belief in one everlasting living God and creator, and can not be an atheist.

  • You must be of good moral character.

Masonry makes good men better.  We do not, however, make bad men good.  If you are a good man, of good moral character, and have greatness in you... we would love to have you!  To ensure that safety of our members and the people that we affiliate with Albert Pike Lodge requires a criminal background check be completed prior to initiating a new candidate.

  • You must be vouched for by a member of the fraternity.

If you do not know a member of Albert Pike Lodge and subsequently have no member to vouch for you that is OK!  Many of us would be happy to get to know over a specified amount of time and then vouch for you if you are worthy.  Many of our members didn't know a Mason prior to contacting the Lodge and now are Brethren helping to build the next generation.

  • You must reside in the state of Colorado.

You must have been a citizen of Colorado for no less than six months prior to petitioning to become a member.

  • You must submit an application and pay the necessary fees.

You must fill out a petition which you can download here.  The petition must be accompanied by the $250 petition fee and completed in your hand, not typed.  Once you become a Master Mason you be required to pay yearly dues.  (Dues are listed below)  If you have questions about the petition please contact us!

These are the absolute requirements to become a Mason in Colorado.

So, no invitation required, the fees are nominal, and your race or religion matters not as long as you're not an atheist.  You also need not be from an affluent family in fact masonry regards no man for his wealth or honors received.  Rather, it is your internal qualities that will recommend you to become Mason.

What we look for in a candidate is a man with strong moral character who is seeking a place with other men of good character to better himself, his family, and his community.  If you think you're that man please contact us so we can get to know you!

One time fee paid at time of application: $250

                             (Lodge Dues) Yearly Dues:               $50
      (Grand Lodge Dues) 2014 Per-Capita Dues:              $48+
                                                            Total:               $98
Yearly Dues
